There's been much talk of an actual GB3 film. Well, Dan Aykroyd has something to say about it in the LA Times.

Dan Aykroyd says 'Ghostbusters 3' may start filming in winter
--Geoff Boucher

I just visited with Dan Aykroyd over at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip for an interview for an upcoming feature in the Los Angeles Times (you'll be able to find it here on the Hero Complex as well). We talked about a wide range of topics, but I didn't want to wait on this update about the third "Ghostbusters" film, which is moving forward after so many years.

Aykroyd said Sigourney Weaver is on board now, as are the original squad of ectoplasmic specialists -- Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson. Murray's presence was the pivot point in making a third film happen. He holds a one-fifth controlling interest in the property rights and has been seen as the most reluctant to return to the paranormal comedy. Aykroyd said that is true but that it's more nuanced than the public portrayal of the situation.

"I don't put not making the third movie on Billy. We can't do that. I've been very busy. Harold's been busy, Ivan's been busy. And a third script really didn't coalesce properly. And Billy, you can't blame an artist for not wanting to do the same thing again. He did two of them, for God's sake. Although I'm the biggest cheerleader as the originator of the concept but I've never begrudged Billy not doing a third movie. I never said he held it up or that he refused. Hey, listen, he's an artist. You can't force somebody into it. I'm sorry he never read my third draft because I thought it was pretty good but, look, now we're at a point that there's a story that he can accept and that's going to work, and I think we're going to be in production fairly soon. We could be in production by winter."

The script is by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the writing team behind the upcoming Jack Black/Michael Cera movie "Year One" (directed by Ramis), and Aykroyd is enthused about its premise of a new generation of Ghostbusters taking over the duties of the aging team. Aykroyd said he wishes Ivan Reitman would return to direct the third film in the series but that he's "too busy as a mega-producer" to take it on; his second choice is Ramis, who, of course, co-wrote the first two "Ghostbusters" films with Aykroyd and has numerous directing credits, most notably "Groundhog Day" and "Analyze This." "He has a lot of things going on, but it would be wonderful to see him do it."

Aykroyd says he believes the movie will move forward but that he has also learned that "at any second everything could blow up." The details of story are still in play, but Aykroyd said he's hoping for a five-member "new generation" team with several female members. "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."

Who does Aykroyd think would be good in the jumpsuits? Aykroyd mentioned two names, Alyssa Milano (who is a voice in the upcoming "Ghostbusters" video game) and Eliza Dushku. "I think they're amazing," he said. "And I'm excited about the whole idea of getting this done."

I know many are against a third film but I am totally for it. I loved the first two and a fan of the cartoon series. Is there any word of Rick Moranis coming back?

Wait a minute, I thought canonically, the video game that comes out this June was going to be the third installment. Akroyd and Ramis wrote it and Murray and Hudson also joined the voice cast. Rick Moranis was the only one who wouldn't come back. So I'm not sure I understand the problem here because it seemed everyone was already on board.

But aside from all that, the very little bit I've seen of the upcoming game does not look good. This seems to me like a franchise killer. I love the Ghostbusters, I love Mr. Akroyd and I'd love to see another quality movie, but it feels like their just cranking this new stuff out simply to capitalize on nostalgia. I realize this is a negative post, but I'm very leery about this.

That's the sort of thing I hate. We have these movies that never were intended on being made, or at least weren't intended on being made right after the last one... everyone's so excited about the news it's happening, or going to happen... and all the sudden, even before it comes out, everyone is ready to bash the film for not holding up to the originals, and not appreciating them for what they are. Especially if the original cast and crew or at least writers and directors are on board. It could be worse. It could be a sequel to a stalled franchise with new actors, writers, directors, reaching for a different focus group than the original... like that terrible sequel to The Mask. Jim Carrey wasn't going to do it, so you get Jamie Kennedy and don't bother to lift a Mask storyline from the comic books? I'm sorry, but The Mask 2 needed to have Walter in it, and someone else who just found the Mask and took on its persona.

That said, if it happens, it happens... if it doesn't, it doesn't. I can't say I severely doubt it, but I can't see it happening... at least as much as they want to do it. I still like the idea of making it akin to Extreme Ghostbusters, and having the older busters teach a new generation at college classes. Bill Murray could okay the rights (since he owns part of the property) and make a brief appearance if anything.

And if it doesn't happen, I still say, find a way to get DIC... oops... I mean, Cookie Jar (another rant for another time) and Sony to work together to make a Real Ghostbusters animated movie DTV (hopefully with a much better animation studio than DIC/Cookie Jar has.... they're stuff is just ghastly looking now). If you can't get the movie actors, you can always get Maurice LaMarche, Frank Welker, et al.

Until I see a movie poster or something else "official" I will just ignore this news. There's been crop-ups of "GB3 IS GETTING MADE/COMING OUT!" before, and I've always ended up heartbroken when those turn out to be false.

Besides, I thought Moranis had retired from the movie business?

Kinda stinks... I would hope that they'd have something with Louis and Janine's relationship... i.e. they married and settled down. Unless they plan to use that Real Ghostbusters/Extreme Ghostbusters thing where Janine is in love with Egon, which really wouldn't make any sense.

Oh, and I would tend to see something more meaty than a movie poster. People can make misleading mockups... remember the Joker poster that surfaced a month after Batman Begins came out? and it was actually an old photo doctored up?

That's true. There are some talented fans out there that could make something believable... so maybe when a poster shows up at the theaters ("They're coming... July 2011") or something.

I never really liked the Janine/Louis relationship very much, though. I though she should've caught Egon, don't know why XD

The Louis/Janine thing is delegated to the movie Ghostbusters 2, where they are obviously a couple... especially in the Babysitting scenes. As for the cartoon series, they made and hinted at an Egon/Janine relationship in the first several seasons up until the release of GB2, where it seems they changed stuff for the cartoon, trying to base it off of GB2.... and from what I've seen of that season (I still need the 200 bucks to get the complete series, by the way) they tried to push the Janine/Louis relationship. Of course, when Extreme Ghostbusters rolled around, Janine and Egon's relationship was re-established... even more exaggerated. One episode even features a cross Janine talking about how she tried 12 years of her life (or so) to get Egon's attention.

Look at me, talking about fictitious relationships and pairings like a fan fic writer. This internet is getting to me.
