Well done muppetperson! I don't know why MR didn't go down that route themselves instead of the sock. After all, many of the real puppets' foam heads were flocked to give them longer resilience and a fuzzy look.
Although later builds of Gonzo did have the raw foam finish, I personally still...
OK Thanks so much Terry (and Mistersuperstar), that had me a bit worried.
It was just that I didn't recall ever seeing Gonzo's mouth done that way inside. I had always thought it was just a sort of soft-edge faded black throat that was painted in with a black airbrushing technique.
So long...
Yikes! I just logged in to post that my Gonzo has arrived in Perth, Western Australia (just collected from the post office).
Just saw your post about flocking Gonzo. I commend you for taking on the risk in trying this procedure, and if it works it should look 100% better than the sock.
But...
Yes, that’s why I'm bringing the point up now at this early stage. Because there seems to be this jump from really nice Terry proto's, to Disney-approved factory product with flaws, at which stage it goes up for sale and the factory churns that version out.
It basically means that Disney...
OK Thanks.....as you say we won't really know 'til later when we see factory samples, but it worries me that by then might be too late down the track for substantial fixes to the design/shaping of the mouth plate/jaw area.
I'm just trying to flag this now as a very important outcome before it...
Perhaps I'm just a pessimist, but these Toyfare pictures of Fozzie really worry me.
Its the mouth.
Not one single shot of Fozzie shows the mouth completely closed.
Terry's prototype from his original photos looked perfect, and it was partly because the mouth was closed with v slight...
I've got a question for those that have received their Gonzo already:
Putting aside the difficulties, risk and skill required to do such a change, if you could re-cover his nose in a thin fleece type fabric in place of the netting, do you think it would be worth doing the modification?
I'm not...
The Gonzo Replica we Could Have Had?
A lot has been said already about the final production MR Gonzo, and this post is not intended to be more criticism.
I accept that Terry and Travis did the best they could within the constraints of the project, and I won't be cancelling my order since it...

There's a couple of really simple ways that this could be achieved during production, still keeping the same mechanism MR uses:

Yipes that's a scary picture.....but that's why I keep bringing up this vinyl head concept. All foam degrades in time, and the Pig's head has always needed continual replacement.
The moulded hollow vinyl head idea might achieve a compromise of at least looking exactly like the real puppets...
Plastic/vinyl parts on Muppet replicas
Hi Travis, thanks for all your really informative answers!
Do you have any opinion on solving the foam head dilemma using a plastic/vinyl "dolls head" substitute rather than fabrics & foams? (more info in my earlier post...
The only thing that might be possible to muck up in the final product would be the mouth.
Lets hope they don't.
The reason is, that Fozzie has a 'shaped tongue' (similar to Animals), so if they tried putting in a firm rubber casting like they did with the final Animal, they would run into...
Thanks for getting this Piggy update, Muppetcaper.
I can't begin to imagine how they're going to solve the substitute material for Piggy's foam head. They've had all those problems just with Gonzo's nose and Animals mouth & tongue. Animal was a compromise, and we don't even know yet how they...
My Animal arrived in Australia this week but I haven't had time to open him yet (come on weekend!).
I agree with some of the comments about us being too critical/idealistic, but I'm pretty sure I'll be covering that eye mechanism, and though I'm loathe to do it, will probably alter the tongue...
