Anyone remember this filmed segment. It all the sudden came into my mind a few days ago. Some kids doing some lame 1970's interpretive dance thing where they were dancing around shouting "AH OH AH OH AH OH AH AH AH AH AH!" or something to that extent.

The teacher then comments about how he didn't like it, which is completely bizarre to look back on now. Doesn't seem to be that much of a motivational thing to say to kids.

Yes, I remember this one! Yes, the instructor was pretty cranky. Not the best way to build kids up by beating them down. But in the end they give him a performance he's happy with.
To me, the strangest part of this clip is the narration by the kid. After his whole spiel about how important dancing was in his life, his final comment...
"When I grow up, I want to be a policeman".

Guess it doesn't hurt to keep your options open.

Maybe that was to reassure everyone that he wasn't a "sissy" because he's taking ballet?

Was it even ballet? They were just running around and jumping and shouting "AH AH AH WAH HAH!"

Somehow, I would too if dancing meant... well... that.

EDIT: Here's the video in question...

In context, now I get it. It's the Alvin Aley school of dance, so I totally get what kind of background this comes from. Seems it's not so much dancing so much as warm up exercise that involves dancing.

But the teacher is still a total butthole.

Having taken dancing lessons as a child (ballet and jazz/tap) it's very common that dance instructors are no-nonsense types. Look at the movie "Fame" for example how tough all the teachers were, that's culled from real life. Anything in the performing arts, the teachers are strict as any kind of performing arts takes a lot of discipline and focus.

They can't sugar coat it. And I took my dance classes young between the ages of 3 until 8, 9 years old. And I realized like the kid in this film at the end I didnt' want to do it anymore. I know people who continued with it, and it's very physically and mentally demanding stuff, but I give them credit.

Ah. That's the kind of insight I was hoping to hear. There seemed to be some sort of values dissonance that came from a 70's segment that seems odd today. Then again, my regular school teachers were all unhappy crones that were like Ms. Hoover on the Simpsons (actually, more like that teacher from that one episode where they showed Bart in Kindergarten)... not even Mrs. Krabappel. Freakin' nasty, jaded Hoover. Even in kindergarten. Then I like watch Arthur or Curious George and see these young, happy energetic and cute teachers, and I'm like... really!?!?

I'm genuinely dumbfounded by something. When did this business start of calling ALL mustaches "porn 'staches?"

I've always loved this film. Once can only speculate whether the boy did "grow up to be a policeman."
