gonzo was rebuilt by Jim and Dave Golez(who started out as a puppet builder)
the original was created by Jim himself, but as with all things muppet puppets need to be rebuilt so they upgraded him to give his eyes more expression, and to make him less sad looking and more manic,
sculpted puppets with raw foam exposed can be very hard to recreate, and over the years many different builders have worked on Gonzo, he looks quite different now compared to his early years, but is still recognizable as Gonzo,
somtimes when a puppet decomposes, u might not have much left to work from for reference, (the original gonzo has long since gone to the great puppet resting place in the sky), so all the current gonzos have been built from the last new gonzo built , which means that all the different sculpters that have had to work from a copy , and not an original, so thier are always going to be differences, photo refernce will only get you so far, remember the original muppet show took place long before the day of high - res digital photos and the photos from back then can only tell so much, even with the detailed instuctions from the builders, and photos refernce its very hard to sculpt a exact likeness of something over and over and over.
