Official Press Release

Hollywood, CA (June 22, 2009) –The Jim Henson Company and Archaia announced today that they have entered into a partnership that will publish comic books and graphic novels based on popular Henson titles as well as new co-branded original properties.

The multi-year partnership will draw from The Jim Henson Company’s extensive film and television library, including Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Mirrormask, The Storyteller and other titles. The agreement also allows The Jim Henson Company and Archaia to partner with talent in the comic book, television and film industries to create brand-new stories under a co-branded banner, building on the legacy of quality and creativity of The Jim Henson Company brand and strengthening Archaia’s relationships within the entertainment sector.

“Some of the best storytellers in the world are flocking to comic books and graphic novels, making them the foremost platform for innovative and imaginative storytelling,” said Joe LeFavi, Director of Publishing and Development at The Jim Henson Company and who will serve as story editor on all the books. “Archaia has always epitomized artistic integrity, and their passion and support for our brands ensure that fans will receive the very best from the properties they know and love as well as from the new stories we will tell.”

“This is a truly groundbreaking agreement, as it is not just a licensing deal but a partnership in every sense of the word,” said Stephen Christy, Archaia’s Director of Development. “To work with the entire Jim Henson Company and with new talent to create the next generation of Jim Henson Company fan favorites is an unprecedented opportunity, and a dream come true for all of us at Archaia. Creating comics that become a part of the incredibly rich Jim Henson Company legacy is an exciting challenge, and I think fans will share our excitement when they see the talent we’re bringing in to help make these comics a reality.”

Representatives from Archaia and Henson will announce creative teams and a release schedule for the initial slate at San Diego Comic-Con International, with the first title tentatively scheduled for winter 2009.

Hey, cool

So wait, does that mean they'll be ANOTHER Labyrinth series? Hopefully, if true, it'll be better than what Tokyopop is publishing (and FASTER, too).

This will undoubtedly mean Fraggley goodness.

I hope they make a real Labyrinth comic with wider appeal than the unattractive manga. Same with Dark Crystal. I hope the hold up on the release schedule with Tokyo Pop is that they've been dumped for Archaia. Their stuff appears to look modern enough without the heavy hand. Tokyo Pop's artists seemed too intent on imprinting their own mark rather than build on or at least honor the genius of Froud.

Archaia has done some pretty good comics. This should be a good match.

I really hope we get some great writing for the Fraggle Comics, much like we're getting with the Muppet ones. Last time a company decided to make FR comics, they did 2 original stories, and adapted several others.... art was great, though.

And I really hope this helps hype up the FR franchise enough to get the movie closer to production, and some plastic merchandising company to look at the license.

There's too little to form an opinion on anything yet, but it sounds interesting. And it's good to see Fraggle at the top of that list. Looking forward to hearing more next month...

Here's a little more information:

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/060923-Henson-Archaia.html

Highlights include:

There will be a panel at SDCC held by both Henson and Archaia, where more details will be released.

Joe LeFavi, Director of Publishing and Development at The Jim Henson Company, will be the story editor the all Henson books.

Fraggle Rock is becoming VERY important to Henson Co, and this is just the first volley into a much bigger marketing pool.

BTW - the biggest reason, as far as I've heard, for the holdup of the Tokyo Pop stuff is because Tokyo Pop is having some financial problems at the moment.

I'm excited about this! And I'm very happy to hear that Fraggle Rock will be a bit more wide spread. There are so many people out there who remember glimpses of Fraggle Rock, but haven't seen it since HBO in the 1980s. I have a great feeling this will help spread the word/song of Fraggle Rock!
It's too bad that I decided against going to SDCC this year...

Something that's wonderful to hear. As long as there aren't any more hold ups with the movie script being okayed (something the Fraggle Rock screenwriter keeps talking about), this sounds like a true reboot of the property isn't too far behind.

I hope this comic book is successful enough to prove it can work.
