I have a genuine question here:

Over the years, which people discussion puppet building on this board and what have you, very often, there's been talks about boiling fur and such... and I just have to up and up ask: what exactly is the purpose of boiling fur? What does boiling it do to the fabric? What improvements are made to the fabric by boiling it? Does it change the appearance in anyway? The feel? The hand? What exactly? Nobody's ever really explained it, and it's kind of treated like common knowledge, but I'm still in the dark about it.

Boiling fur changes straight fur to nice, wooly, rumply stuff. I'm sure you know what fake fur looks like off the bolt. Now look at a Fraggle's fur, or Fozzie Bear's, or Rowlf's. That's what boiling will do.
