I found this news item on Big Cartoon Database:
Joel Schneider, a project developer at Sesame Workshop and an early leader in the development of children's television, died September 12 of cancer in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He was 61.

Schneider was the content director for Cro, an animated science series broadcast Saturday mornings on ABC. Among the voice actors in the 1993 show included Ruth Buzzi, Jim Cummings, Tress MacNeille, Candi Milo and Frank Welker.

He was also content editor for Zook & Alison, a series of animated shorts released by Buzzco Associates, Inc. and aired in 1992 on PBS.

He helped develop Kami, the first HIV-positive Muppet, Kami, for South Africa. Kami debuted on Takalani Sesame (the South African version of Sesame Street) in September 2002. The Muppet encourages children to be inclusive toward those afflicted by HIV/AIDS.

Born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Schneider started his career as a mathematics teacher. While teaching the subject at Pennsylvania State University, he worked with prospective elementary school teachers. This led him to specialize in mathematics education.

In 1983, Schneider joined the Sesame Workshop as a project director in the software division. Two years later, he became the content director and senior mathematician for a daily kids' TV series on math, Square One TV. Later, he led the development and production of Math Talk, the series' school version.

As well, he was the content director for Risky Numbers, a half-hour math game show, licensed by the Sesame Workshop for production abroad. The Polish version, Szalone Liczby, has been on TV since 1995. Later, Indonesian and Israeli versions were produced. The Chinese version, 1-2-3-4-5, premiered in 1999.

As the non-profit Sesame Workshop's vice-president for education and research, Schneider recently concentrated on the organization's activities in China. He helped develop a project to produce a planetarium show with a Sesame Street theme.

Joel Schneider is survived by his wife Claire, a brother, two sons, and two stepchildren and six grandchildren.

To honor his work on the Sesame Workshop's global health initiative, the workshop will establish the Joel Schneider International Research Fund for Global Health.

I am sorry to report this shocking passing, but I had to let y'all know.
