    I haven´t seen this movie...YET.

Is it good?Is it worth renting? How is David Bowie?
How close is in spirtit to"The Wizard Of Oz"?

My English teacher recommended it,so I assume it´s bad,but I want to hear your opinions before drawing my own conclussions.

    So,should I rent it,or not?

    bowie and all

it is really strange, and a little scary for little kids. i couldn't watch it for years (but i'm a wimp). the only advice i can give is, give it a chance. it isn't your usual muppets.

Hey! If your English teacher says it's good, it's probably good! In this case, he/she is definately right!

Opinions on "Labyrinth" tend to be varied. Personally, it's my favorite Jim Henson project ever. But many Muppet fans feel differently.

Have you seen Jim's other fantasy film, "The Dark Crystal"? It has kind of the same look and feel, but it's not as dark. Jim caught a lot of flak for making DC as dark as he did. People weren't expecting that from the creator of The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. So he put in a lot of comedy (courtesy of a script by former Monty Python person Terry Jones) and a lot of music (courtesy of Bowie, who also plays the film's villain).

Ironically, many Henson fans hate this film now because of all the songs and silliness. They feel the film can't be taken as seriously as The Dark Crystal. However, I feel that in spite of its stunning production design, Dark Crystal just feels too oppressively dark after a while. I like the music and the humor of the film.

I also think Jennifer Connelly does a great job as the heroine. (She's too young for me there now, but she's still lookin' fine these days!) ;)

So, while I don't know your sensibilities, I hope I've given you enough information to know if *you* want to see it. If you do, please let us know what you think. We talk about Labyrinth often in the Fantasy Worlds section of this forum. (Note to forum administrator: this thread, in fact, ought to be moved to the Fantasy Worlds section as well!)
  5. I totally dig "Labyrinth". I like it a lot more than "The Dark Crystal" (not that I don't like TDC, I just like L that much more).

If you've seen "The Neverending Story", I actually think the feel o' that is pretty similar to "Labyrinth". :)

As for me, I'd say RENT IT!

    :D

Heck, you may even wanna buy it after you've seen it. :)

You should definitely see it--it's very creative and innovative, and can be entertaining if you're in the mood for it. I generally "appreciate" it more than I "enjoy" it. If that makes any sense.

Some nice characters, and great story, puppetry, and designs though.

I mean, can your English teacher be WRONG? Really?

Agustinaldo, I just noticed that part of your original question was "How close is it in spirit to The Wizard of Oz?" Well, as I said, it's a fantasy with music and humor, all qualities it shares with Oz. Also, at the end you're kind of wondering "did it really happen, or was it just a dream?" as you do with Oz. However, remember the flying monkeys in Oz? A lot more of Labyrinth is like that scene; it's not as bright or cheerful. Also, there are a few vulgar jokes (though not a whole lot) that would never have appeared in the G-rated Oz.

Again, I love the film. I'm just trying to give you some kind of feel for it so you know what to expect.

No... you should definately not rent this movie. You should buy it!
It's a terrific show with muppet effects that prove why Henson was the very best at his work. David Bowie was perfectly cast, singing some of the coolest songs in his carreer IMO.

Anyway, as you can see, I liked the movie. I definately recommend it to you...to your friends....to your family....to.....

Labyrinth is deffenitely one to see. If you can, get the DVD. It's so much better in widescreen, much grander, you can see how much work went into it (the same thing with The Dark Crystal).

In all, Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal are some of the best Fantasy films ever created. In my personal opinion (though I'm probably in the minority), even better than Lord of the Rings.

I too, "dig" Labyrinth. There's the same fantasy feel to both L and TDC but L is not as, well...'dark' as TDC. It's very funny, very good, I love the music, the characters are great. Definitely Definitely see it!

I'm with ya about Labyrinth being better than Lord of the Rings. Of course, it's not quite a fair comparison because Jim wasn't trying to adapt a classic epic work. But LOTR (while a stunning-looking production, and probably the best adaptation possible with such a long text) was still often oppressively boring to me.

For me, the best fantasy movies are Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, The NeverEnding Story, The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Ladyhawke, The Wizard of Oz, Willow, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Dark Crystal, and The Two Towers, in that order. Yes, I know Oz is more historically significant than the other films, but I'm putting them in order of which ones I'd feel like watching tonight if I could choose between any of them.

BUY IT!!! In fact, if you have a Sam's Club neartlby and own a Sam's card, buy it at Sam's!!!! Because they have a DC & L DVD TWO-PACK selling for 16.82 there!!!!

I'm with Chilly Down, I LOVE this movie. I don't like it as well as The Dark Crystal, but I love it. The music is #1!!! I have the soundtrack, and it is my favorite to turn up really loud. I love "Magic Dance" and "Chilly Down". Definately a movie to watch and even own. No, It isn't Kermit the Frog and Gonzo and Miss Piggy, But it's excellent!

    GO SEE IT!

True, but I wasn't comparing it to the adaption. I was comparing it to Lord of the Rings.

J.R.R. Tolkien was deffenitely a master and visionary, but, the book bore me to death. Love the movies, though. But, I wasn't comparing The Dark Crystal and Labyrnth to the adaption. I was comparing it to the whole thing.

Sorry if I offend anyone with those comments, but, that's the way I feel.

I'd have to agree with your list of Fantasy films (other than Harry Potter. Anyone else notice that Hogwarts comes straight from Labyrinth?). Not EXACTLY in that order (TDC's my favorite fantasy film), but those are all the best.

"Love the movies, though. But, I wasn't comparing The Dark Crystal and Labyrnth to the adaption. I was comparing it to the whole thing."

I think we're basically talking about the same thing here. I'm just saying one of the reasons why LOTR doesn't work for me as well as Labyrinth does is the difficulty of adapting such a long book. I still enjoy the movie, though.

"Sorry if I offend anyone with those comments, but, that's the way I feel."

We hold opinions outside the majority, but no one's bitten off our heads yet. ;) I think with the current world situation, everyone realizes that fantasy movies are hardly worth getting worked up about.

"Harry Potter. Anyone else notice that Hogwarts comes straight from Labyrinth?"

Well, "Hogwart" was only said once in Labyrinth, and it was a mispronounciation of "Hoggle." I doubt J.K. Rowling was really thinking of that when she came up with the name, unless it was on a subconscious level. When Harry Potter starts wandering a maze with a bitter little dwarf, then I'll start screaming copyright infringement. :smirk: Glad you liked the rest of my list, though.
  17. DirthNader New Member

*groan* "It's Hoggle! "..........Not really angry here, just quoting the movie ;)
  18. Super Scooter New Member

Yeah, that was more of a speculative joke. Although, you never know. Ever hear of Toad the Wet Sprocket? Their name comes from Monty Python (okay, bad example. Toad the Wet Sprocket's probably much better known than Hogwart from Labyrinth). It's probably just purely coincidental, but... :) I like to cause trouble!

    ;)
  19. Chilly Down Member

Hmm...Toad the Wet Sprocket...a Fraggle Rock ripoff, perhaps? ;) (just kidding)

    (careful, newbie speaking)

The labyrinth had a HUGE effect on my life, I first saw it when I was about six, my parents taped it for me and I wathched it occasionaly. Later I forgot about it. But when I was about 18 or so I whatched it again, and totally loved it! I was going through a bad period, nothing seemed to motivate me and I was constantly depressed, but when I saw the Labyrinth it cheered me up and more importantly it helped em to dream again.
At school my whole life was planned out for me. I was smart so I was supposed to finish school on the highest level, go to university and become a respectible citizen. I choose bioligie, physics and chemstry so I could become a vet (that and, besides from english I'm realy bad at foreign languages), but after a year or 2 I could see myself as a vet anymore, it wasn't what I wanted.
The labyrinth made me realise that I wanted to go to art school, eventhough my school had made me believe that I couldn't do it. Dreaming gave me a purpose, hope and above all some selfconfidence.
I'm currently taking a preperation course for art school because I choose the wrong subject, but I've allready been tol that it's more than likely that I will be allowed to attend. I've only had positive responces so far and that feels great. Haven't been depressed since I started there.

to all the kiddies: Schools are no evil, mine was just an exception. My school is notorious for pressuring people.

Conclusion:Go see the Labyrinth or I'll summon Jareth to take you away!
