Left out of the goodnights...

Discussion in 'Classic Muppets' started by Philip Kippel, Sep 4, 2005.

  1. To revive a topic that was once done on the original Muppet Central Forum, which muppets do you think should've appeared in the goodnights in specific episodes of "The Muppet Show"?

Muppets that I would've included in the goodnights in particular TMS episodes are as follows:

#7 Florence Henderson: Lenny the Lizard and the Snake Frackle
    #10 Harvey Korman: Robin
#13 Bruce Forsyth: the duck instead of one of the male pigs
#15 Candice Bergen: Boppity instead of Gloat and Mildred instead of Hilda
    #20 Valerie Harper: Floyd
#23 Kaye Ballard: the barber instead of Gonzo and the Jim Henson Muppet instead of Scooter
#24 Mummenschanz: Gonzo (to come back onstage to talk to the Mummenschanz with the other Muppets, even after Piggy hit him)
#31 Edgar Bergen: the time man (from "Time in a Bottle")
#32 Steve Martin: Baskerville and Lenny the Lizard
#35 Dom DeLuise: one of the merdledops instead of Gonzo
#47 John Cleese: Gonzo, Robin and Sweetums
    #57 Liberace: Piggy
#59 Raquel Welch: the spider and Gloat
    #63 Lesley Ann Warren: Rowlf
#66 Leslie Uggams: Gorgon Heap (but he wouldn't eat anyone)
    #68 Sylvester Stallone: the lion
#70 Roy Rogers & Dale Evans: Fozzie, Link, Bullets Barker and some of the gophers
#79 Dudley Moore: the bug band
#81 Beverly Sills: some of the showgirls from the opening number
#83 Lola Falana: Trevor the Gross
#89 Star Wars: Scooter, Fozzie, the shepherd and some of the sheep
#91 Lynda Carter: Janice, Floyd and Super Sheep instead of the generic sheep
#96 Diana Ross: Lenny the Lizard
#101 James Coburn: Betsy Bird, an octopus and the "Close to You" singer
#102 Brooke Shields: Scooter, Rowlf, Dr. Teeth and Floyd
    #104 Señor Wences: Pinocchio
#105 Debbie Harry: Mulch and the gargoyle (gar-girl)
#109 Tony Randall: some of the cave pigs
#110 Mac Davis: Link and Fozzie
#114 Marty Feldman: Fozzie instead of Scooter
#120 Roger Moore: Lenny the Lizard instead of the small crocodile

    heres what I think

Heres who I think should have been in the good nights.

    Ruth Buzzi: Boppity
    John Cleese: Gonzo and Sweetums
Marty Feldman: all of the Sesame Street characters
    Gene kelley: Lobbock Lou
    Mellissa Manchester: Floyd and Lips
  3. Two more:

#17 Ben Vereen: the two-headed singer instead of Scooter
#18 Phyllis Diller: Rowlf instead of Piggy
  4. Gorgon Heap Active Member

#3 Joel Grey: Gloat instead of BD
#15 Candice Bergen: Boppity & Mildred instead of Gloat and Hilda
    #18 Phyllis Diller: Rowlf
#19 Vincent Price: some different monsters besides the usual Boppity & Gloat
#20 Valerie Harper: Floyd & Clodhopper
#23 Kaye Ballard: Thog & Animal instead of Gonzo & Scooter
    #24 Mummenschanz: Gonzo
#36 John Cleese: Gonzo & Sweetums
    #39 Lou Rawls: Floyd
#41 Julie Andrews: Gonzo ('cept for the fact that it'd detract from the hilarious closing comment)
#48 Cloris Leachman: Fozzie, Gonzo, Piggy
    #50 Leo Sayer: birds
#51 Roy Clark: I dunno, just more- as it is, you can barely see T.R. (eyes visible for a second) and the goat (mouth visible for a second)
#63 Lesley Ann Warren: Gonzo (although again, that might've marred the closing comment)
#68 Sylvester Stallone: Hawaiians, Lion, Romans, groupies, Scooter
#70 Roy Rogers & Dale Evans: prairie dogs, Fozzie, maybe Link- why have Scooter in there if he was only in one scene?
#72 Cheryl Ladd: PIGGY! Hello?! She was in half of the numbers for cryin' out loud!
#73 John Denver: someone other than just the closing # cast (and IMO this one would've been better in front of the closing # set)
#74 Crystal Gayle: not necessarily missing, but it would've been nice to see one of the Gills Brothers in the goodnights at least once
    #77 Victor Borge: Gonzo
    #78 Linda Lavin: Robin
#85 Dizzy Gillespie: Floyd & Zoot instead of Scooter & Bo
#86 Liza Minnelli: Piggy instead of Janice
#89 Mark Hamill: Angus McGonnagle, sheep, Scooter
#91 Lynda Carter: superheroes instead of Strangepork and Gaffer
#94 Andy Williams: Piggy! The episode just kinda peters out after her plot thread ends, and then she doesn't even appear in the second half of the episode!
#100 Shirley Bassey: any barnyard animal
    #101 James Coburn: octopus
    #105 Debbie Harry: Mulch
#109 Tony Randall: cavepigs, maybe the gorilla
    #110 Mac Davis: Link!
#112 Gladys Knight: Fozzie! He was in half of the acts for cryin' out loud!
#113 Hal Linden: Piggy, one of the Atrics maybe
#114 Marty Feldman: Fozzie! Otherwise fine, good sampling of characters from the episode
#117 Johnny Cash: Fozzie, Gonzo, Billy Boy

You guys look like stolen cars!

I'll just do some of those I have on tape (and some of them have already been mentioned):

    Elton John: the crocodiles
Julie Andrews: Annie Sue, Uncle Deadly, Sweetums
Mark Hamill: Scooter, the sheep, Angus McGonogall
Paul Simon: the guy on stilts
    Raquel Welch: the spider
Harry Belafonte: the tarantula from "Banana Boat Song", Lew Zealand
John Denver: flowers, any one of the Whatnots that sang "Why Can't We Be Friends?"
Peter Sellers: Gonzo, any Whatnot from the "Cigarettes and Whiskey" number (can't decide who)
    John Cleese: Gonzo
Dudley Moore: one of the bug band members
Alice Cooper: Beakie, the ghost from "Welcome to my Nightmare"
Vincent Price: one of the Heaps
    Marty Feldman: Fozzie, Sam
Gilda Radner: that Whatnot man at the end of "Lullaby of Broadway", maybe?
George Burns: one of the Spanish pigs
Bob Hope: Paul Revere the Horse, hunters (?)
Brooke Shields: the Duchess, anyone from the Jabberwocky skit
Rudolph Nureyev: Link Hogthrob, the dancing pig
James Coburn: one of the octopi, Betsy Bird, a cowboy, the "Close to You" guy
Sylvester Stallone: either Quango the Gorilla, the groupies, or some centurions
    Debbie Harry: Mulch, the Gar-girl
Roger Moore: anyone other than the monsters
Kenny Rogers: the Gambler (was he in the goodnights? I forget), the doctor, the nurses
  6. I forgot about Angus. I'd have included him in the goodnights in that episode as well.

The Gambler did appear in the goodnights in the Kenny Rogers episode.

Still more ideas based on those I have on tape:

    Liberace: the goat, Annie Sue
Lynda Carter: the idol from the opening #, maybe?
Tony Randall: any one of the cave pigs, one of the chamber music players
Beverly Sills: any one of the showgirls, Zeke
Pearl Bailey: any one of the gospel singers from the opening #
Liza Minelli: any one of the disco dancers, possibly?
    Edgar Bergen: the Time Man
Danny Kaye: any one of the long-haired Whatnots from the opening #
    Senor Wences: Pinocchio
Lola Falana: any one of the disco dancers in Lola's number, Trevor the Gross (was he in the goodnights? It slips my mind at the moment...)

It's been a long time since I've seen that episode, but I don't remember Zeke being in this episode. Where was he? If he was in a scene that was cut from the Nickleodeon broadcast then it would make sense that I wouldn't remember him being there and having a big enough part for him to be needed.

Here are a few others (that I forgot to mention) who should have been in the good nights.
Leslie Uggums: at least one of the monsters from the openign number (it would have been cool to have seen Big Bird and Sweetums standing together)
Shirly Bassey: Lips (mainly because this was one of the few episodes where he appeared in more than one scene, even if one of those scenes was the u.k. spot)
Rita Moreno: Marvin Suggs and at least one Muppaphone

And if the first two epsiodes had more characters in the goodnights, then...
Juliet prowse: Fozzie, Scooter, Muppy, and Mahna Mahna
Connie Stevens: Ernie, Bert, Zoot, Fozzie, Gonzo, at least one Mutation, and Lydia
  9. Gorgon Heap Active Member

I'll throw mine in for the first two:

#1 Juliet Prowse: Juliet, Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Rowlf, Scooter, Snowth
#2 Connie Stevens: Connie, Kermit, Fozzie, Gonzo, Zoot, Lydia, Ernie, Bert

    David "Gorgon Heap" Ebersole
  10. Another one:

#16 Avery Schrieber: the green eel instead of Hilda
  11. Yet another one:

#6 Jim Nabors: a jugband member instead of Gonzo and the whatnot woman from "Gone with the Wind" instead of Wanda
  12. Gorgon Heap Active Member

How about Scooter instead of Hilda, since Scooter was a big part of the backstage plot?

    David "Gorgon Heap" Ebersole
  13. I was thinking that too. So, yeah, let's go with Scooter instead of Hilda in the goodnights for the Avery Schrieber episode.

As for the goodnights in the Juliet Prowse and Connie Stevens episodes, my picks would've been:

#1 Juliet Prowse: Juliet, Kermit, Fozzie, Scooter, Rowlf, Mahna Mahna, the Snowths
#2 Connie Stevens: Connie, Kermit, Ernie, Bert, Fozzie, Gonzo, Lydia, Zoot, a Mutation

    1. Juliet Prowse: Scooter & Muppy
    2. Connie Stevens: Bert & Ernie
    5. Rita Moreno: Marvin Suggs
    6. Jim Nabors: Scooter
    10. Harvey Korman: Robin
    17. Ben Vereen: The Two-Headed Singer
    47. John Cleese: Gonzo
68: Sylvestor Stallone: The groupies & the lion
    70. Roy Rogers & Dale Evans: Link & Bullets Barker
    89. Mark Hamill: Angus Macgarngoyle(sp?)
    110. Mac Davis: Link

That's all I can think of right now. I'll post more later.
  15. Also, how about Andre the Artist instead of Scooter?
  16. TotallySpiesFan New Member

    Scooter's actually in the goodnights.
  17. KCJ506 New Member

Whoops wrong episode. I meant the Avery Schreiber episode.
  18. Also, how about a Snerf instead of Gonzo?
  19. Gorgon Heap Active Member

Snerf, yes! I should've said that. The fact that they appeared backstage showed that there were no obvious black controls that would show outside of their usual backdrop, so feasibly they could've.

I think that in Season One they just preferred to stick with the main cast and chorus rather than one-shot characters and the stranger creatures (i.e. Ragg Mopps, Java Muppets, Snerfs, etc).

  20. Some more:

    #4 Ruth Buzzi: Boppity
    #9 Charles Aznavour: Mildred
    #11 Lena Horne: a Ragmop
#14 Sandy Duncan: Mary Louise and the crocodile
#25 Don Knotts: the lead gingerbread man and the "Windmills of Your Mind" creature
#33 Madeline Khan: 2 Mutations and a bandito lobster
#44 Petula Clark: Nigel, T.R. the Rooster, the Black Rooster and Ronald Duck
#64 Danny Kaye: the "Age of Aquarius" singers and the Swedish Chef
