    Fact.

A toad is just a frog with a different name given to them. They're just not as slimey and have bumps.

The world has held great Heroes,
    As history-books have showed;
But never a name to go down to fame
    Compared with that of Toad

    The clever men at Oxford
Know all that there is to be knowed.
But they none of them knew one half as much
    As intelligent Mr Toad!

The animals sat in the Ark and cried,
    Their tears in torrents flowed.
Who was it said, “There’s land ahead?”
    Encouraging Mr Toad!

    The Army all saluted
As they marched along the road.
Was it the King? Or Kitchener?
    No. It was Mr Toad!

    The Queen and her Ladies-in-waiting
Sat at the window and sewed.
She cried, “Look! who’s that handsome man?”
    They answered, “Mr Toad.”

"We're down, lads!" came a cry
    Bow plunging from the sky
    Three thousand horses silent
As the ship began to die

The flares to guide her path
    Ignited at the last
    The Empire of the Clouds
    Just ashes in our past

    Just ashes at the last…

Can I just say Lloyd Grant has a really nice voice?

It's too bad he only did the original recording of "Hit the Lights" with Metallica in '82. Seems like a really cool guy.

The R-101 was the airship version of the Titanic. A government-built ship, far too heavy, too slow, not tested enough to make it all the way to India. I'm surprised she got as far as France.
Government incompetence on display. And since 1930, very little has changed.

“It is a very poignant story, a very human story; a story of ambition, incredible dedication by the crew and dreams – dreams of flight, of an empire that was supposed to spread through the clouds to join the furthest parts of the British Empire together with these great armadas of airships. And the crash was the end of the whole thing.

I’d just been to an airship auction, being a bit of an airship geek. I had a couple of bits of memorabilia from the R101. I made models of it when I was a kid, I knew the story and tragedy of it quite well and I thought, ‘maybe I could make something out of this'.

It was a moment of triumph, it was a fleeting moment of victory for everybody there. The crowds were there, it was a massive national event. I believe it was the minister of aviation who stood on the steps and declared there was only the ‘millionth chance’ that anything could possibly go wrong.

As the airship dropped its water ballast, everybody with their upturned faces would have got a little bit wet – a sort of baptism, as it were.

As in most things like this, it is never one thing. It’s a series of events, what in aviation accident-speak they call Swiss cheese. You can’t see through them but they’re full of holes. If you were to make slices of that Swiss cheese and then jiggle the slices round, one day all those holes will line up and that’s when you get an accident or a tragedy.

It was rushed into service, it was structurally quite fragile, it had terrible problems with the covering on its outer skin, it was underpowered, it had never been tested at full speed and there was political pressure to go to India. And, of course, it decided to go and do it in the teeth of a howling gale.

Literally, the front of it is being torn off in the storm and the bowel is starting to drop. And, tragically, the most experienced pilot had now gone off shift and was in bed and the less experienced guy made the decision to cut the power.

But of course that let the nose drop even more because there was no forward thrust, and as soon as the bowel hit the ground it stowed the engines, which were hot, into the fabric full of hydrogen and highly flammable – and also the calcium flares, which the airship used to navigate.
Those flares were stored on the bottom of the airship. So when the airship hit the rain-soaked turf, all those flares ignited at once as if to make sure everybody was going to be incinerated quickly. It was a terrible, terrible thing."
~Bruce Dickinson, writer of "Empire of the Clouds"

I've dedicated as much time studying the Hindenburg. Biggest disaster ever in New Jersey (until Hurricane Sandy). Watched the newsreel footage since I was 12, always amazed how fast the ship burned.
And Led Zeppelin had the good taste to put it on their first album cover. 8)

I love stroking kitty belly. My cat doesn't like it, but my mom's cat will tolerate it.
