XERUS’S VOICE ARTIST FOCUS:

Today’s V/A focus is that classic variety cartoon series from 1964, Linus the Lionhearted. The main cartoon was about a lion named Linus who was the king of a bunch of crazy animals in a jungle. The side cartoons were Rory Raccoon who was a hometown hero, Lovable Truly who was a kindhearted mailman, So-Hi who was an Asian boy who told oriental versions of classic fairy tales, and Sugar Bear whom you might recognize from those Super Sugar Crisp commercials. In fact, each of the 5 main characters had their own cereal which they advertised during the commercials.

SHELDON LEONARD: Linus the Lionhearted
GERRY MATTHEWS: Sugar Bear
BOB McFADDEN: Rory Raccoon, Lovable Truly, So-Hi
CARL REINER: Billy Bird, Dinny Kangaroo, Sacsha Grouse
ED GRAHAM: Mockingbird
RUTH BUZZI: Granny Goodwitch
JESSE WHITE: Claudius Crow
THURL RAVENSCROFT: Theme song singer

With guest voices by Paul Frees, Jerry Stiller, Ana Meara, Sterling Holloway, Fredericka Weber, and Jonathan Winters as So-Hi’s mother. Plus a lot of other guest celebrities who didn’t want to be credited. They were known as the Bashful Bigshots.

And here’s the neat theme song to Linus the Lionhearted, plus the cereals each character represents.
