Lou Reed passed away today after dealing with liver problems for several years now. He first came to attention with the Velvet Underground, recording such great songs as "Sweet Jane" and "Rock And Roll", and then went to a long and always interesting (if not always good) solo career, with great songs like "Perfect Day" and "Walk On The Wild Side". He will definitely be missed in the music industry.

Here's my favorite song of his, "New Age", from his days with the Velvet Underground.

Lou Reed was, first of all, like no one else. Talk about unique! That's worth a lot right there, because let's face it - a lot of people make music that feels like the music of others. And then he was a true artist. That word artist is used even for people who make the most bland commercial stuff, but Lou Reed experimented and pushed the envelope all the time. And lastly, he made honest heartfelt songs that can put a tear in your eye just as often as he made aggressive noise rock. He was the real deal. RIP Mr. Lou Reed, and thank you so much for sharing your gifts with the world. One of the best of rock and roll, and one of the best of all artdom, really.
