My friend is trying to build a rod puppet with a mechanism like Rizzo's for the mouth. So I'm posting this for him: do any of you know the schematic for putting this together? I know it's a trigger type, but I don't know how it's put together. If anyone knows, or has their own design idea it would be a big help!

I don't think anyone has an actual schematic for Rizzo's control, but there are a couple of different approaches to making this kind of puppet. The simplest way is to purchase a fish hook remover (Wal-Mart should carry them in their sports section) and use that for the control.

Another way is build a mechanism similar to the type used in Vent Dummies. You can find some examples of this here and here.

Nick Barone also has some diagrams available on his site puppetbuilder.com (scroll down the page to "puppet building handouts").

I hope that helps!

I believe it works the same way as a leaf picker.. You know a long stick with a grabber that opens 2 hooks to pick up the leaf?
But instead of two hooks its his mouth...

Hi,
I thought would put some input on this. Here are a few more websites that have some great diagrams.

http://www.puppetbuilder.com/info/rod.pdf

also you can look at www.dpuppets.com look under custom section you will find a crab puppet that is only 12" tall and about 1 1/2 in diatmer. The mouth is like pepe and mechism is like that.

Schematics For Rizzo Control

For the record it's not as complicated as one might think. I remember when Pepe was being built for MT the puppet builder took a look at the Rizzo puppet just to see how he moved, then he just went and made up the mech. himself on the spot. I'm pretty sure he never looked at the plans for Rizzo's mech. or even inside the Rizzo puppet to see how it was built. If you have a copy of Down at Fraggle Rock, there is a scene where Faz holds up a Doozer and operates him a bit. Although the doozer mech. is a bit more complicated cause it has greater range of movement, some of the parts look and function the same way. The links that have been provided here are a terrific way to go about it. I know that some place I have a copy of the Rizzo mech, but by the time I find it you'll be finished with your puppet. I'm sure you will be able to come up with a solution that is just as good.
