I'm just gonna say any time they use a song out of context and rerecord it for a commercial, THAT'S the worst cover you could possibly achieve.

I heard this terrible peppy version of School's Out for Summer on some lame back to school commercial for Staples last night.

There's a furniture store (or perhaps mattress seller) that uses a cover of "In My Life" by The Beatles in their commercials, and it's awful. Aside from that being a song you probably shouldn't cover, their version sounds like it was recorded at 2 beats per minute.

Relient K's Is For Karaoke series usually has covers better or equal to the original. I haven't listened to all the songs but they're pretty good from what I've currently heard.

There are Beatles songs that really shouldn't be included in commercials. In My Life is one of them, and I swear it's been used before. I also swear there's one that used Imagine form something disgusting. Thankfully that's been pulled.

While I'm not a huge Elvis fan, I find the Viva Viagra commercials as absolutely egregious and horrifyingly disrespectful as Elvis's wife and daughter did. And they could literally do nothing to stop it because of the record label that owned it. Then there's that HORRID Seabond denture cream that stole "Bye Bye Love." See? This is why I keep saying the recording industry is run by Satan.

About 25 years ago Nike got this ball rolling using "Revolution" to sell sneakers.
Although if "I'm Only Sleeping" or "I'm So Tired" was used to sell mattresses,
somebody might end up with a Clio.

My inner geek loves the music video, even if it's one of those videos that makes you sit there and scratch your head, wondering how it relates to the song.

The Punk Goes... compilations are really hit-or-miss when it comes to covers. They're usually way better than the original, or just as bad as the original. The newer albums aren't as good because they use screamo/death metal bands for the covers (I don't like songs that are nothing but growling, it's better when they're mixed in with normal vocals). The Punk Goes Classic compilation was actually pretty decent, but bands can't cover classic rock without getting tons and tons of internet backlash.
