It said it'll maybe have one human??!! It's not the Muppets without several humans interacting with the muppets. Oh well at least we'll have a new movie.

WARNING: Here be possible spoilers for the Oz books. Scroll past them if you do not want to be spoiled!

Well, the biggest difference between the book and the movie was that, in the book, Oz was not a dream Dorothy had after suffering a head injury. It was a real fairyland that she not only traveled to via cyclone but visited several times before moving there permanently. Another is that Glinda is the good witch of the South, not the North, and she doesn't play as big a role in the book as she does in the movie. And there are several events that take place in the book that are either not included or glossed over in the film.

a huge difference between the movie(s) and the book is the amount of violence. the wizard of oz has, on many occasions, been on lists consisting of the most violent books.

    HA HA HA!!!

I bet I know what the future holds now with Disney:
What USED to be classic hand drawn animation will become CGI, and the Muppets will become hand drawn animation.

Well, It is heartening that they are writing the script from the book, rather than the original movie. But, I would much rather see the Muppets doing their OWN thing. While Muppet Christmas Carol and MTI were good, for the sheer fact that they had some good muppety moments, I far prefer the original productions- old and new. I feel the Muppets are better when they have the ability to do whatever they want, even if it doesn't make sense or carry the plot of the story.
    Okay, end rant. :smirk:

Actually, LAND OF OZ (aka THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ) was book #2, and OZMA OF OZ, #3. Anyone interested in all things Oz is urged to check out the FAQ at http://www.eskimo.com/~tiktok/ozfaq.html . And it's not surprising that this production will be based on the book, as it's been in public domain since 1956, while the MGM film is still very much under copyright and it would cost a nice penny to use it as the basis for the film (of course, if Time Warner, the current MGM OZ owners, had bought the Muppets, it would be different..).

I'm pretty excited for this especially if Pepe is featured in it. Hopefully Piggy won't be too mad when she finds out she's not Dorothy....or have the roles even been decided?

Thanks; I have all this posted in a different thread at General Discussion (for 'just Oz' stuff, not Muppet Oz stuff) but was too lazy to flip back over to look at it! LOL!! :o *hey, who's throwin' tomatoes?*

I'm intrigued by the news that it will be based on the book, and not directly on the movie, though I'd be surprised if there weren't a few satirical nods to the movie, since the whole world knows it so well.

Yay! It makes me overjoyed seeing that not only has Disney bought the muppets from JHC, but that the Muppets are headed in the right forward edgy direction with this production! Woot for entropy!

What is the difference from the movie and the books?

I hope Dr. Teeth is in it!!! He's the best Muppet! Well, I like him, but I'm starting to like others better. I hope Sweetums is in it too!

Is there a cast list anywhere?

Others may have already pointed this out (I didn't read the whole thread) but at the risk of sounding negative - at this stage a notice like this in Variety makes this project about as "official" as that Fox TV Muppet Show we've been waiting for. They haven't even got a script yet so the deal could be killed very easily.

That said, it is Disney's network (ABC) and it's probably close to a sure thing. But we've also heard that before...here's hoping we'll be seeing this soon!!

There's a LOT of differences, and it's easier to tell you to just read it. If you go to this thread I started for Non-Muppet Oz related conversations, there's a link that you can go to to read the book online: http://forum.muppetcentral.com/showthread.php?t=13147

I was just thinking about this film and Disney's ABC network and la-de-da. Let's not forget what Disney's ABC did with Muppets Tonight after only almost 4 shows: Cancelled it to the Disney Channel. BLAH! :grouchy:

Okay, I'm still a little confused about a few things. First, is this going to be a made for TV movie, or a buy-your-tickets-and-popcorn move? Also, will there be music in it? They obviously cannot use the music from the original movie (or can they?), and the last Muppet movie (MFS) didn't have any Muppet songs in it which I found to be very disappointing. I know that nothing is really set in stone yet, but if anyone has heard anything I'd appreciate the clarification.

Made for TV, based on the book not the '39 movie. I do hope for original songs!!

I wish they could be doing something original as well

I have mixed feelings as well. I am thrilled that it is another movie going to be filled with the humor of the muppets, but I am just tired of seeing things that have already been done. At least Kermit's swamp years was an original idea and most of it was pretty funny, but the whole Good boy movie was like homeward bound in a sense. I just hope that this will bring more fans to the muppets ranging from all ages and to have the company to be promoted in positive light as it should be. That those who thought the muppets are only for kids will see the dream that Jim Henson had for it.
