Oh definitely, I think in the fandom layer, those kinds of fans are in the middle. They're more than casual, but they don't go overboard.

But even with the overboard fans, you're right many people having very difficult lives and it's great when they have something to latch on to.

Let me just clarify here. Ahem...
There is a time and place for cosplay. Sure its not MY thing but I know lots of people who do it. But...when time..place...and frequency start to get out of hand...THAT is when I worry. Thats where Im coming from.

I remember the Star Trek fan from Trekkies who wore her Starfleet uniform everyday, including to jury duty. Now obviously that's extreme, but I have to admit I always kind of understood her. Many people, in fact most people, live very mediocre, thankless lives and want to feel like they're part of something special. Would I wear a uniform every day? No, lol. But at the same time I was a bit jealous of her. :)

Are you referring to my post?

Yeesh, sorry I ended up stirring up a bit of a debate around here about the subject.

I see where you're coming from Charlie, and that's another part of the reason why I TRY to keep an open mind about people like that, but both heralde and bandit seem to know where I'm coming from as well when people are like really OCD about their fandom and everything, THAT'S when it seems to get really, really scary, and frankly, it just seems to me that half of all cosplayers are the ones who are really OCD about it and things start to get out of hand because they let it take over their lives and themselves.

Don't be sorry, it's fun, lol.

Thing is if it wasn't cosplay it would be something else. The need for fulfillment will always be there.

Too true! I was just having this conversation with another member the other day. I've seen the same militant and obsessive fixation found in certain breeds of anime fans, Star Wars, Trekkies in grown men who collect military memorabilia. It's a mind set.
Hey, but you know...someone out there right now is thinking 'A FORUM!? for Muppets?! Who are these people and what are they doing with their lives?!"
    *shrugs* o.o

Oh yes, sometimes I'll tell a friend about something I read here and they'll be like, "Wait, where was this?" And I'll say, "Um...well...a Muppet message board." And they'll say, "There's a Muppet message board?!" LOL

I'd be lying if I said I would never cosplay. I'd try it once or twice. I seriously was planning on going to an anime convention dressed as the pokemon mightyena. Eh...that never happened. I'm not upset about it either. Being an overweight girl makes it hard to cosplay to begin with :p
  12. heralde Well-Known Member

Is it still coplaying if it was Halloween? Because I did bring out the Starfleet uniform a couple of times then, lol.

If it was Comic Con or something, I'd want to do something subtle, nothing too flashy, just something that might get the occasional positive reaction from passers by. :fanatic:
  13. D'Snowth Well-Known Member

Well, Halloween is more for kids, whereas cosplaying seems to be more along the lines of being for twentysomethings, thirtysomethings, etc, who have no life, lol.

Ah, but see, there's also a problem with that kind of mindframe:

See, there are two kinds of people who attend these conventions: 1) lonely and alienated girls who are desperate enough to hook up with the first guy who hits on them, and 2) the guys who are fully aware of that and take advantage of it. Trust me, I've seen it happen.

LOL Oh COME ON! That's not true! I mean, yes, those two types exist for sure but those aren't the only people who go to conventions. My very best friend is happily married with kids and a good job and she always attends the one in Atlanta. So there's gotta be a mid -range here too. I'd go to a convention and...c.C There's no way I'm gonna go to hook up with one of those costumed weirdos. (JK! JK!)
Like I said, -I- wouldn't dress up for a con but I like costumes as much as the next person. But...you kinda have to when you work with kids.
  15. heralde Well-Known Member

Welllll, I agree that those types do go to conventions, but there are other types too. Like Bandit says even whole families go to conventions together. It's fun for a weekend. I once saw an entire four person family (Mom,Dad, Son, Daughter) ALL dressed as The Flash, lol. Very impressive costumes too! :wisdom:
  16. D'Snowth Well-Known Member

I didn't say they were the only ones who go to these conventions, I'm just saying among the people who do go, those are probably two of the most prolific kinds of people you'll find there.

Heck, I've known a girl who up and moved in with the first jerk who started hitting on her at a convention. Okay, that's a SLIGHT exaggeration, but she did hook up with him after he hit on her, and they did end up moving in together.
  17. heralde Well-Known Member

I know this might be stereotypical but frankly the most prolific people I see at conventions are guys who just want to buy comics and toys and will barely look at the girls, lol.

And that would make Big Bang Theory a much better show, but instead, obviously with Chuck Lorre at the helm, it's more like my previous point.
  19. heralde Well-Known Member

It's definitely a combination of the two types that's for sure, lol. Though I don't think that's so bad, they are supposed to be older guys. I don't watch it regularly but I do enjoy it. I was surprised a lot of people didn't think it portrayed that type of fanboy well. I mean where else on TV are you going to see someone receive the entire "He tasks me!" speech from Wrath of Khan? Lol
  20. bandit Well-Known Member

o.o I like the show and I think the guys are pretty nerdy. Though, they are overlooking an entire breed of DUMB and nerdy guys that seemed to infest the comic shop where I worked oh so long, long, loooonnnng ago.

There are all kinds in every faction of life, I guess. I don't even wanna know what category people would try to fit me into. =_= *shakes fist* If it isn't 'totally awesome,' then duct tape that trap, darn it!
