How many times were there when Sesame Street used a different piece of music to close the show?

I know of only two times.

One show was when someone was apparently moving into the second-floor apartment near Hooper's store; indeed the whole thing began with Mr. Hooper pointing to the top of the stairs and saying "These boxes don't belong down here they belong up there!". So the adults and even some of the kids decided to play a game of "Pass it along" to get the boxes upstairs. Everyone quickly got into the rhythm of "Pass it along". There were no instruments, but there was plenty of clapping and such. The Pass it along song continued against announcement of the sponsors and all the way to the presentation of the CTW emblem.

The other show was when Sam the Robot was on an ego trip. He was trying to show off his ability to synthesize common sounds, but some of the adults kept getting alarmed by these noises. For example, when Sam made the sound of a tea kettle whistling, Luis raced inside to see if he had forgotten he'd boiledwater. And when Sam made the sound of rain falling, David (who was working in Hooper's store at the time) raced outside to put up the store awning. The adults confronted Sam towards the end of the episode, so Sam decided to synthesize nicer sounds, like that of birds singing. Then Sam played an instrumental song that he once heard a cement mixer sing. The result was this beautiful organ/synthesizer piece (which I really enjoyed, but never heard on a record or anywhere else). Sam read the sponsors and CTW credit against this music.

As an aside, once in awhile the TV game show Jeopardy! would do something like this. If a conspicuous piece of music were played as part of an Audio Daily Double, they would play a few bars of that same music as the bumper before the next commercial.

They actually did this on Sesame Street MANY TIMES over the years. Usually if there happened to be a piece of music on the final scene, they would just close the show with it. Sometimes they would actually play the theme differently, but it wouldn't be the regular harmonica closing theme. There was an episode that closed with Stevie Wonder singing his song that he had done for the show, "1 2 3 Sesame Street." It was originally part of an episode, but it re-aired as an insert.
