Hi there,

I'm new here, so let me introduce myself:
I'm Jop from Rotterdam (the Netherlands) and I am
a big fan of the dutch Sesame Street (Sesamstraat) and
I have been watching some classic American Sesame Street recently on YouTube. As a singer and guitar player (no pro of course) I'm very interested in the great Sesame Street songs. Now I can find most of the songs on muppet Wiki or by Google, but there's one song (a favorite) that I can't find.
It's called Let's do the wash or Do the Wash. I love the melody and the muppets are rocking on this one. Does anybody know who wrote it and on which Sesame Street record it was released?

this are the lyrics:

(A room with a washing machine. As music starts, a man walks by with a laundry basket. A boy comes up, whacks the side of the machine so it starts running, then he sings)

Boy: When you're eating spaghetti
And it gets all over your shirt

Little boy: (coming in) When you're making mud pies
And you come home covered with dirt

Man: When you look like you live in a pig pen
And you don't even know why

All: (joined by a young lady, an older lady, and a lady with glasses)
When you look like guck from your head to your toes
Who knows what to do with those dirty clothes
Let's do the Wash!

Glasses Lady: It makes your clothes so clean

All: Let's do the Wash!

Little boy: Just put 'em in the washing machine!

All: I love to hear that soap and water slosh

Boy: So come on, baby

All: Let's do the Wash!

(All swing their heads round and round, imitating the action of the washing machine)

Young Lady: When you're skippin' rope
And the rope trips over your shoe

Glasses Lady: When you've got an ice cream cone
And it drips and it sticks like glue

Older Lady: When you just try to jump a puddle
And somehow it gets on you

All: I know a way that I bet we could
Get those dirty clothes lookin' good
Let's do the Wash!

Young Lady: It gets your clothes so clean

All: Let's do the Wash!

Man: Just put 'em in the washing machine

All: I love to hear that soap and water slosh

Older lady: So come on, baby

All: Let's do the Wash!

(head swinging dance again)

Ooooooooooooo!
Let's do the Wash!

Glasses Lady: It makes your clothes so clean

All: Let's do the Wash!

Little Boy: Just put 'em in the washing machine

All: I love to hear that soap and water slosh

Boy: So come on, baby

All: Let's do the Wash!
Do the Wash!
Do the Wash!
Oh......
Yeah!

That skit would have to have gone back to the late 70's as I recall.

Joe Raposo write many SS songs, including the show's theme, though I read elsewhere he left SS after 5 years or so after the show debut but returned in the 80's and remained till his death in 1989.

I wouldn't know about this song you mention.

Thanks,

the song was released on a 1982 Dutch cassete
so it should be pre-1982. Joe Raposo wrote some great songs,
Let's do the wash could be his. I hope some of you will shine some more
light on this case

please

*bump*

Doesn't anybody have any more information on this great song? As far as my information goes no 'famous' puppets sang on this one? Maybe the anything people? I really love the song but can't find a mp3 or the cd or album it's (originally) on.

Uh could you not ask that question twice? If no one's responding then you're probably asking something no one has an answer for.

ohh sorry, didn't know I was violating forum rules here. At some forums you can do '*bumps*' after a week and since I knew some more information I thought maybe I can trigger some forgotten part of the brain of some forummembers who seem to know a lot. Again, sorry and just forget that I asked anyway, it's just a song.

Nope, don't know what you're talking about, although the title reminds me of a song on an old LP from back when Gordon had hair. Yes, on top of his head. But this song seemed to be about washing yourself, rather than clothes.

he only had hair because it was a different actor.. the Gordon we all know (the one who's still on today) started in 1974 and has never had hair on Sesame Street

are you talking about 'everybody wash'? Gordon had hair on the LP I have with Everyboy Wash on it. I find it very surprising that I can't find anything on this song in the Sesame Street files on the net (the muppet Wiki). There's the great Sesame Street Sound Archive: (http://members.tripod.com/tiny_dancer/index2.html ) were I got the lyric of Do the Wash from. Do you maybe know any other sites? Love this forum btw.
