DVD Decoder Upgrades

Does anybody know where I can get a (preferably free) upgrade on Sony CM(R) DS VideoDecoder? My DVD player on my computer was working fine earlier this week and now it has stopped due to "digital copyright protection". I've tried everything with no avail and the internet doesn't seem to be helping either. Does Windows offer a free upgrade or something?

I'm not sure, while my computer is able to recognize DVDs, Windows Media Player is never able to play them because my computer was never had the "proper codecs installed".

I have found that I was able to play DVDs on VideoLAN (VLC for short), which is yet another program for watching videos on a computer (like Windows, Real, QuickTime, etc).
