I've read that on early episodes of The Muppet Show, Fozzie's character was not very interesting and it was only in the second season that his personality was really developed.
Funny though, I would have never thought that myself. I thought he was great from the very start. In the very early episode with Joel Grey, I love the way he annoyed everyone by making jokes out of anything the characters said and how it finally played out on stage. It was also in the first season, that he did his hilarious skit with Kermit about "Good Grief! The comedian's a bear!" Mind you, I haven't seen the later seasons for many years now, so it's difficult for me to compare the first season to anything else, but I really enjoyed all of Fozzie's early scenarios as well as his ear wiggling. (I kind of wish they would have continued that; it reminded me of Stan Laurel. And like Fozzie, Stan Laurel's exaggerated ear wiggling was done with behind the screen tricks, not on his own).
