I'm wondering what you pro peeps use for hair? I saw stiqpuppet using ostrich feathers and it looked great. Anyone know any retailers that I could actually walk in and see it before I buy it?

What else do you suggest?

I know a lot of people use parts of boas that you can get in pretty much any craft store (I've used that before). I'm pretty sure I've seen peacock feathers at Hobby Lobby before. I'm not so sure about ostrich feathers though.

do boa's work well? They seem like they'd be hard to use, but then again... I'm a newbie, what the heck do I know?

Don't worry about it all, I am too. I'm just going off what little I know and have done so far so you might wanna take this with a grain of salt.
I took a boa (not a feather one but one lile this http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/fluffy-boa-208249/), cut a peice off and it worked really well as a little tuft of hair. I'm not sure what would work best if you want like a full head of hair though.
Hope that helped some.

Ahh, I see, that's cool, thanks for sharing it. Those look like something you can find in a craft stre, I think I have but I can't be sure. If I see something though I will totally let you know.

Oh, you know what! I bet you could find something like that in the fabric section. That look sliks somthing that could be sold by the yard. Smething like this?

I have used both types of boas in previous puppet builds. The only thing that I had a problem with was that all of the feathers kept falling where I cut it so there was an area that was not covered w/ them like the rest of the head. Ostrich feathers, are great for little accents of hair. They are very Axtell bird style. They have a limited selection of 3 or 4 colors at AC Moore, but here is a site that sells all different colors (it is a little pricey though...).

Ebay might have them too.

Hi. I used the biggest orange ostrich feathers I could find for my Floyd replica. See link. The really big wing plumes are expensive.

I ended up using different size smaller feathers for his ponytail and hiding the spines of each one with off cut feathers. If possible, keep the feathers on the spine as they will probably last longer. I had to cut a groove in each cheek of the puppet and embed/glue them in his face ( including the spine ) to make sure they stuck out.
