No problem--I didn't really know what the term meant until fairly recently. Here's about the best I can explain it:

A communist basically believes in a classless society where everyone has equal right to property, food, etc. In a communist society, resources are pooled and distributed equally by the government. The government also sets prices and there is no economic freedom.

The opposite of communism isn't clear. It sort of depends on which aspect of communism you're looking at. Most people would say either facism (one ruling class like Nazi Germany) or capitalism (economic freedom like the U.S.).

George Bush is most definitely a capitalist. Capitalism is more of the "every man for himself" approach and resources aren't pooled. A capitalist believes that prices should be based on supply and demand. The government does not determine who gets resources.

Hopefully, that clears it up a bit. Keep in mind these are very basic definitions though.
nice, thanks muchly. just one more dopey question...in a communist society noone should be poor or disadvantaged...right?
was that the general idea of it? who are communists nowadays?

This is nothing against you, dude, but I HATE Timmy! He was worst the thing ever to happen to South Park! Worse than Towelie, okay! And that's pretty bad. (But that's just one person's opinion. But I've got no problem with the avatar!)

But other than it's spiffy-fantastic! X3

Yeah, that's exactly right. In a perfect communist society, no one would be very rich or very poor, but everyone would be right in the middle with an equal amount of wealth. Unfortunately, it hasn't historically worked out that way.

The only current communist nations I know of are China, Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam. I'm not too up on current events but I believe some of these are (slowly) moving towards a more capitalist system.

The down fall is that in a socialist society, like these mentioned, the hard-working people who acheive are punished by having their wealth redistributed amongst the rest of the community. Sort of super taxation if you are successful. This tends to take the desire to succeed away from people. "Why would I excel when we all get the same amount? I'll just do no more or no less than the guy beside me."

It's like if you are working on a school project with a group and you do all the work, while the other nine people do nothing. You sweat and toil, and they do nothing. Everyone gets an A. The next month another project, same thing, everyone gets an A. At some point you become fustrated because you are carrying everyone else. So, why try as hard to make the other peoples grades better.

I realize this is glib, but its one of those "Looked good on paper" things.

Isn't it though?

:concern:

Communism was a half-baked theory that fell into the Looks good on paper, seemed like a good idea at the time category.

In practice, most everybody other than government members was poor and you had to ask your government, take a number, and wait sometimes years for material goods such as refrigerators or bathroom fixtures, assuming you were fortunate enough to have a bathroom.
Cubans wait for the day their formerly vibrant, exciting, colorful country becomes a democracy.
South VietNam is now free, healthy and thriving. North VietNam continues as a closed, oppressive Communist regime. Ditto the Koreas, North Korea being today the most closed society on Earth.
China is an interesting mix of the old Communism and the peoples' desire for capitalism. They're the only ones currently open to change.

Oh, lest we forget - you could and can also be imprisoned and/or bumped off for criticizing your government. Just one of the nifty little extras of Communism.

:attitude:

Let's go shopping now.
