Do networks usually have policies of how long the initial contracts for a show should last? Meaning that if a series is bought, would a network or production company normally order a certain number of episodes or seasons at first?

I don't know what you mean exactly. But a lot of the time TV shows that get green lit will have an order for a certain amount of episodes, maybe about four to six. Usually how those episodes preform will determine in the show gets picked up for a whole season or not. Sometimes if it could go either way, but they show signs of being potentially successful, they might get half a season and then they go from there.

Not an expert or anything, but that is a general way of how it works and I hope the helped you somehow...
