Okay guys -- I am baring my soul here and showing some lousy pictures of my first puppet. This one is made out of stuff I had around the house, just to get a feel for making patterns, eyes, that sorta thing. There are some pretty glaring errors I've noticed already (the mouth is pretty wonky -- and I can't stand the shirt) but what does everyone think?

Be merciless -- but be constructive! If it sucks, tell me WHY it sucks!

Ah man...I thought it was gonna be Really Bad the way you described it.....But I Really like him, he's Cool...I like the shapes on the Stomach...those sorta remind me of Dudley the Dragon...I like that...I also like the dots on his head. What Could be worked on is the upper lip in the middle....But Overall I like it!

He looks great! I love the spots. Are the spots painted on?

His mouth could use a little work but, he is fantastic for your first puppet!!

What is his name?

Hey, thanks for the kind words! I guess I am a super perfectionist. I see a zillion things that I could fix.

The mouth is very wonky. I'm gonna rebuild the guy and fix all that. I built him out of junk foam I had laying around, so unfortunately he is already falling apart internally. C'est la vie.

The spots are little felt spots that are supposed to go under furniture. I'm colorblind and thought they were black, but once I was told they were green, I thought "Aha! Now I can make the guy look less like Kermit!" A pack of twenty or thirty little felt circles (different sizes) was two bucks at a Joanne's that was closing. I got a ton of fur and stuff, cheap!

My girlfriend named him "Skip" I think...

So I am working on my second puppet... I'm wondering, what steps do you fellow puppet-builders take when building puppets? Do you do drawings? Full-color renderings? (I do!) How many tries does it take to get a decent pattern for the foam "skeleton?" What about for the fleece covering? (That part is killing me!) Do you dye your antron fleece before you cut it, or afterwards? (Is that a stupid question?!)

That's a great first effort, Aaron. It's quite charming.

Especially considering the way you "built yourself up" that is an awesome puppet! If you really don't like the shirt one made for teddy bears would probably fit (available at most craft stores that sell "bear blanks" like Michaels) or if the puppet is bigger you could try an infant or child's shirt. Great work!
