Everytime I watch Alice in Wonderland, I am asked this annoying question:

How is a Raven like a Writing Desk?!

I Do not get it! Did anyone figure it out? Does anyone have a CLUE to it's answer? I don't get it!!! Let's make some guesses...

I guess the similarity can be the color perhaps?

They were both written on by Poe.

    Simple.

    ...Wow...

I had no idea it was such an easy question...

Wait, he wrote on a raven?!
  4. basicallygood Member

He wrote a poem called "The Raven."
Which means he wrote on a raven.

    Ohhhhhhhh.

Hey, I don't know poetry that well, I wouldn't know!

Hah, I just found out the answer a few months ago. So you aren't the only one :)

I'm not a big poetry person either but I would recommend The Raven and Edgar Allen Poe in general, he's amazing. :)

I've actually never read a word of Poe, but I hear he writes about dead chicks, LOL

Ha, well technically since many of the women in his life passed away.
  10. miss kermie Well-Known Member

How on earth does that happen to one guy so much?

Hey Poe, I've got a poem for u!

    Rose are red
    Violets are blue
    'Ol lady luck
    Really hates you!

    just Sayin'!

Yeah sadly the all too frequent culprit was Tuberculosis. It's been rumored that Poe might have been a carrier but I don't know if that's ever been confirmed.
  12. miss kermie Well-Known Member

...What on earth is Tuberculosis? What kind of disease is that?
  13. heralde Well-Known Member

It used to be much more frequent in the 1800s. Remember the musical Rent? Obviously that's about AIDS. But it's based on an opera called La Boheme, when artists were being plagued by Tuberculosis.

Jasper Fforde wrote several good riffs on that whole raven/writing desk joke. I won't ruin them by posting here, but I highly recommend his Thursday Next series for literary puns and jokes aplenty!

I actually have to be tested for TB every year for my job. Talk about ridiculous paranoia. If I was coughing up blood ya think I'd have realized something was wrong...do we really need to TEST for this anymore? What about smallpox? Huh? Or polio? Or bubonic plague?

*is always irritated by purposeless bureaucracy*

    Really? Thats it?
he was also a drunk and suffered from depression. Writing was probably his way of releasing his feelings about stuff like that
  16. miss kermie Well-Known Member

Wow... You guys are so much smarter than me!

But then again, I'm only 13. LOL

You might read some Poe in high school and if you don't there is still sure to be some in the textbooks. Every english textbook I have had has had at least one Poe story
  18. miss kermie Well-Known Member

Wow. He's the second Poe I've ever heard of.
  19. heralde Well-Known Member

Yeah we also watched the A&E Biography on Poe in High School which definitely made me appreciate him more. :)

But even earlier than that, I think my first intro to Poe was from Charlie Brown and the gang, lol:

HaHa, good 'Ol Charlie Brown! He's hopeless!
