Well think about it. The music was haunting, the way the U grabbed him was haunting. I mean even the origional song is haunting. If it were done by the Beatles or Little Ceaser and the Consuls then that's another story.

I don't think that it was scary - although I was into my teens the first time that I saw it. I knew that it was one of the typical SS parodies or plays on words, and thought it was kind of funny.
Really, what's scary about a letter U that wants to chill with Smokey?

This may be off topic but I was just wondering. Didn't Smokey do another song once on Sesame Street with Telly?

I thought the U was just a plain letter U, not any gender-specific U.

No, not particularly.
Though now that I'm older, would've maybe liked it better if it had been a male U Muppet squeezing and grabbing onto a female singer.
But it's an OK song/sketch.
That’s funny you say that cause I once rewrote the lyrics for this where Hilary Duff was bein constantly grabbed by a male letter U! Too funny!

While this thread is bumped.

I remember once thinking the backing vocals were Jerry and Richard (given the low quality the first upload of this song had).

On another note - this is a good example of stalking done through the style of Seaame Street
