The WWE: does it get any worse than this garbage?

Haven been a rabid WWF fan from 86 to 99, I think I can honestly say...in 2003: The WWE needs to crash like Enron and go the way of the Macarena. It's hard to have respect for folks who find this garbage entertaining, why? Because the company doent care about the fans...yet people still tune in. Sad.

The straw came in 1999 when Owen Hart plummted, snapped his neck, and died in front of millions of people on pay perview...and then 10 minutes later they sweep his dead carcass out of the ring and continue on with the wrestling...!?!?!?!? That night I thought to myself, where has this 'sport' gone?

So I finally tune in for the first time in ages...and what do they open with? The death of one of the people on the show. What kind of sick plotlines and scripts are they writing? Ive seen wrestlers pull guns on other wrestlers, Ive seen the most horrific racial, and violent angles played out. But man...this is just too far.

Not only that, but the Dubya Dubya Eff really doesnt seem interested in sparking the imagination or appealing to fans anymore. Why should they, they bought out the competition. No more Rock, no more Stone Cold. Just a bunch of pretty boy twinks frollicking around in the most horffic skits, with women protrayed in the most upsetting manner. Heck, I shouldnt even say women as the female wrestlers they get on there look like men.
Not only that but Vince bungled two of the biggest dream angles in wrestling history, the WWF/WCW angle and the nWo return. Wow. And look what they did to ECW. So yeah...Im sick of seeing WWE stuff at Toys R Us, and the WWE continuing to be on the air with this sick crap.

Ive been hoping, as a pro wrestling fan of too many years to remember, that a rival company starts up. Oh well.

You know what I find really sad about these wrestling programmes. People seem to think they are for real. when they are so obviously NOT!!!!!!!!!!

Then I get kids at school pretending to be wrestlers and breaking their arms (or hopefully their necks!)

I have to agree with you here. I never heard the example you stated. I watched the MTV Tough Enough series a couple times (for entirely different reasons ) and didn't really get why people would really want to do that for a living.

It's just violence for violence sake. No real plot (just some cheesy acting) and teaches children to be aggressive and solve problems physically rather than mentally. It all just seems rather lowbrow to me. I don't really like boxing either, but it isn't marketed at children. A few people complained about the Muppet special having some subtle adult themes, but where’s the outrage about the violence intended to entertain kids? I guess we all draw our own lines and mine is drawn at violence.

I know there are wrestling fans on the board and I certainly don't want to offend them. I just don't get it. I also don't get why people who don't hunt would want to buy guns, but that's an entirely different matter.

Heh...well unfortunately the eye candy only runs one way, as there sure aint no chcik eye candy...they all look like grotesque surgical nightmare men!

But yeah...Jami eyou dont EVEN wanna know some of the angles and plotlines played out over the last few years. To say shocking and utterly tasteless would be an understatement.

I cant imagine there are fans of the *current* WWF(or WWE or whatever) I mean it boggles the mind to see how people could enjoy this stuff. And the WWF doesnt even try to seperate fact from fiction, they blend it together so the more cluless folks think its real. Like I said tonight they had one of the characters die...WTH? Didnt they already have more than a few wrestlers die within the company...they dont need a skit like that.

I reallly don't feel like getting into this argument. I just want to say one thing. For the past few years Vince McMahon has been promoting WWE as Entertainment. It's no longer the old school wrestling. It's an entertainment show that glorifies violence. I see nothing wrong with that because it's the same as everything else on TV today. Most people who watch it know it's fake. I know many wrestling fans and none believe it's real. It's a male soap opera.

I'm no longer a fan, and it's not because of the content of the show, i found it entertaining for many years, i just don't have the time anymore to sit for 10 hours a week watching it. It's easy being a muppet fan because a new movies comes out once every other century.

I really don't like the issue about Owen. What happened to him was an accident. Race car driving continues when one of their people die, and people die in that sport more often than in wrestling.

So my word of advice for everyone is if you don't like it don't watch it.

My real issue with it is not to censor it, but take a deeper look. It's just violence for violence sake. It doesn't really have a plot aside from the "I'm gonna kick your a$$ rhetoric. It also teaches children to be aggressive and solve problems physically rather than mentally.

I don't know of any primetime programs aimed at children that push violence over plot quite like wrestling does. I just find it disturbing, but I know a lot of people who grew up liking it and they turned out fine so you have a point. It's hard to get away from wrestling programming these days. Anytime I tune into MTV or other cable channels these days, they are showing hours of wrestling. Why? I sometimes feel like it's being forced in my face. I just don't get it. But, yes, I do turn it off. And, hey it's still better than an episode of the Real World.

Is wrestling really aimed at children?

Exactly. Sadly the WWE tries to continually aim for the 12-17 crowd...that was great in the 80's/to mid 90's...but when they went exposive over the top adult angles(porn stars, death, etc) that's just way over the line.

The crap that is on tv aint the WWF I used to tune into every week. The pacing of plot lines is gone, there is no draw anymore. It is just a mess.

Yeah, I know the Owen thing was an accident, but the way it was handled was really bad. It's almost like they made it part of the angle or something...as back in 1999 they continually blended in fake with real when it came to injuries...like the boy who cried wolf. As for Nascar...

What other sport continually year after year after year has not only some of its biggest stars die every year, but also fans in the audience!?!?! Ok, that might be accompanying the mullet toothless world of right turn/right turn motor sports in general...but what ended up having to the Muppets at Chicago Speedway was a travesty.

Thank goodness JHC never got involved with pro wrestling!

I agree. Through the years there have been many toys, cartoon shows etc featuring wrestlers in their gear and these products were aimed at kids. Look in the audience - lots of kids. It's not really an adult sport. So, yes. Historically it has targeted kids and continues to do so. I think the fact that they’ve started showing episodes on MTV (a channel that caters to the “tween” crowd) illustrates the point. I find it a fairly obvious melodrama of violence for kids.
