As much as it pains for me to say it, I really do believe Big Bird isn't as popular anymore. Maybe it just me(and I hope it is, lol), but it just seems pretty weird that ten years ago your one of the 5 most popular muppets, and today, well.....

I too feel sad over Big Bird's decline (not to mention the way Bert and Ernie get shown separately most of the time, nowadays). The only reason Cookie Monster remains so high on the list is that he has at least one guaranteed appearance on the show, in the "letter of the day" segments; I'm afraid that only more guaranteed spots could save the classic Muppet characters from fading out.

Most definately. I read in an arcticle kids favorite characters (cira. 1997) were, in order:

Elmo
Big Bird
Ernie
Cookie Monster
Zoe

I guess that's why you saw a lot of merchandising with these 5 characters.
