Your Feedback: News and merchandise layout updates

Today we have rolled out some layout and design changes to several of the pages on Muppet Central. I wanted to let you guys know a little bit why these changes were made and how we hope they help to make the site more useful for you.

All of the information on these pages has been on the site in some form, we are just trying to improve the organization in some areas, especially in terms of current company news and merchandise news.

Our home page has been redesigned with a lead story that takes up the top of the entire main content frame. Below that are three smaller columns with links to related info for news, merchandise and articles. The biggest change is that in addition to official releases, forum discussions are linked under these categories. This allows us to quickly update the site when new info is available whether there is an official release or not.

    2004 NEWS PAGE

If you click on the "more news" link on the home page it will take you to this page (which is now the default news page for the site replacing our old one).

Basically this is just an expansion of the news highlights for the year as we have always done. There is also a "dates to remember" column with a descending list of upcoming important dates whether that be related to TV news, appearances or company news.

So whether it's an "official" story from Henson or just a possible rumor, all news events big and small will be listed on this one page for the year.

This is a new page in the news section. Previously we had all news stories grouped together, but this will allow you to have one page solely for all merchandise news and discussions. Like on the other page, there is a "dates to remember" category of important upcoming release dates.

Take a look at the changes and let us know what you think. There are still some tweaks and updates needed here and there. So we will continue to modify things some as we go along. Hopefully having one page for all Henson/Sesame Workshop news and one page for all merchandise news will be helpful.

    I like it. I think it's a tad more straightforward and user-friendly

I really like it - especially the clearly defined news, merchandise and articles sections on the main page with their graphics. Also the increased interactivity with the forum is very cool and i liked the use of 'MCR' for Muppet Central Radio. The calendar element is going to be very useful for people indeed. The only suggestion i would make is to draw more attention to the merchandise news section on the regular news page. Right now it's just a text link at the bottom but maybe if it was also an eyecatching graphic (maybe with an arrow element - like 'Merchandise News -->') to the right of the '2004 News Headlines' at the top of the page it might make sure people don't get confused about the new divide.

Yeah, I got a comment. Piggy is hotter than Jessica Simpson. No offense, Jess.

    Everything else is cool too.
  5. I like it, I like it, I like it! It is so much easier for me to view things. In the past I would have to scroll down more becasue the images and text were separated. But of course I am on a Mac so that is what actually caused the problem. But I don't have the problem any more. Thank you so much!

I just want to thank everyone for the feedback. Keep it coming. It is very helpful and we are glad the changes are initially very popular.

Luke, thanks for the suggestions. I added two merchandise/news links at the top of both of the pages. Let me know if you think things are a little clearer now.

I see no flash navigation at the top... Using Mozilla 1.4, aka Netscape....

This happened last time you guys rearranged stuff. Might want to do a little more cross-browser checking...

It should be working for you now. I fixed the page and the update tested fine for me under Netscape 7.0. Thanks for reporting the issue. This is the first I have head of it since the updates yesterday.

Very cool, Phil -- a much more streamlined look. I like it! And the calendar will be very useful indeed.

One suggestion: there should be more differentiation between the news articles and the discussion threads. I know that's how you had it before and you're trying to remove away from that. However, several times I clicked on what I thought was a news item and was taken to a discussion thread and vice versa. Kind of confusing.

Overall, though, very nice. Thumbs up!

Replace those ugly Fun 4 All SS action figure prototypes with something from Sababa or Palisades. It's all good after that.

    Thanks for changing that. :)

The pictures under the three headings (news, merchandise, articles) will be changing frequently to add a fresh look to the home page.

I agree. I've experimented with adding an icon or something similar to designate between forum discussions and news articles. Haven't found anything we're happy with yet, but will continue to consider that for future updates.

How about a small Reporter Kermit Icon for news reports, and a clapboard reading "Forum" on front icon? Jamie, the king of all technology, could do that I'm sure.
