I was raised Baptist, and Southern Baptist has a reputation of being franatic and forceful (as even said by Father Mulcahy on M*A*S*H once).
Eventually, when I was a teenager, my folks and I left the Baptist church, and ended up converting to Presbyterian - mainly because the Baptist denomination had so much hypocrisy and drama going on behind the scenes, and our church was no exception (affairs going on among the church staff, extortion, among other things) - plus, they seemed to always preach more about offerings and tithes than anything else.
We had an incident at the church one time where our musical director (who's very passionate about music, and likes to try different things for Sunday services) got in trouble with the pastor for trying to have African music during a service one morning, because, "we don't want any of that n----r music in this church." Similarly, at the time we were attending, there was approximately one black member in the congregation, and more often than not, some of the older ladies would say "bless his heart" (a southern phrase of pity) in regards to him.
