To show you how much things have changed: once when I was five, I threw a tantrum in public, and my dad smacked the taste out of my mouth. Last time that ever happened.
As I got older, sometimes I'd be in the store and see a toy I really wanted. But couldn't afford. My mom would say "No", and that was the end of it. I might cry or sniffle on the way out, but no tantrums or meltdowns.
By the time I was 8, I'd do extra chores, odd jobs, anything it took to raise that enormous sum of... ten bucks. I'd work like I was possessed, but after a month, I had enough money saved up for that special... whatever it might be.
But that taught me a valuable lesson. If you want something bad enough, you gotta work for it. Sometimes at the end of the month, I'd go back to the store and find that what I thought I wanted, I really didn't want. But now I had ten bucks for something I really had my heart set on.
And somehow even the shopkeepers seemed to notice. " You earned all this? You must really want this".
There is a feeling of pride when you spend money you earned on something special. And you're never too young to learn that.
