Either Disney has to team up with Sony (not likely); or they have to buy out Sony's part (somewhat likely); or they films won't get a home video treatment.
I'm sure Disney and Sony will have to team up together.

Final Features Listing

I was able to get in contact with William Merchan, the brand manager of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, last week. He gave me the final list of features for each disc (see below). He said that many things they wanted to include (such as the past bonus features from the old Muppet Treasure Island DVD and some other goodies planned for the other films - such as all the small behind the scenes featurettes) were not possible given the space available on the discs (remember that each disc holds two versions of a full-length movie - widescreen and full-screen - and if they compressed it anymore they would be un-doing all their restoration of the picture and sound quality and making a pretty bad DVD).

Sadly Disney did not see these titles to be big enough for 2-disc sets at this point (at the time the project was conceived, their only experience with Muppets on DVD were the previous MCC and MTI DVDs). The main purpose of these 4 "50th Anniversary" titles was: 1) To get these films back on store shelves. 2) To get the films out under the Disney title. 3) To cross-promote Kermit's 50th. And 4) To get more Muppet exposure and make the major Muppet works more available to the hopefully growing (or re-growing) fan base to enjoy.

I was told that maybe some day down the road (and that is a big "maybe", and is in no way a committing "maybe") Disney will decide that these films deserve 2-disc special editions loaded with all kinds of goodies (there is more than enough related material on each film to fill 2 really nice collector's discs; given a little bit of time and money is spent to produce such sets). However, I've been told not to expect that to happen for at least another 5+ years (if ever). If the small single disc sales show that there are people interested in these films and that the Muppet films have potential on DVD, than Disney will likely take notice and in a few years we may all have to go out and re-buy them in awesome collector's editions (that's how the industry works - you may notice that many past bare-bones DVD titles are being re-released in anniversary or collectors editions; it is because the past DVDs sold so well on a constant basis that producers saw their was a strong fan base for the films). Maybe 2-disc anniversary editions will come out in 2009 for the 30th of The Muppet Movie; 2011 for the 30th of Muppet Caper; 2012 for the 20th of Christmas Carol; and 2012 for the 15th of Treasure Island (and maybe TMTM and MFS will be under Disney's control by then) -- who knows, nothing is planned. So buy these discs to show support for the films. And also feel free to write/call/e-mail Disney asking for more in-depth collector's releases for the films (it can't hurt).

But with these releases, bonus features aside, keep in mind that you will be able to get these four great movies, restored, remastered, and looking better than ever (along with some small bonuses).

Here is just an except of what William Merchan, the brand manager of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, had to say on the subject:

The correct and final information of disc features is listed below, and is also now posted on Disneydvd.com:

These have all been restored and remastered. The sound and picture look better than ever and we have both a wide screen and full frame version of all films on a single disc. We hope fans will find these titles compelling and apologize for any confusion that might be out there.

There are some discrepancies floating around on other Disney sites (such as DisneyDirect.com), and even customer service was misinformed on the sets. We are working to sort out this information and get it updated. Thank you for your inquiry and we hope you and the rest of the fans enjoy these great Muppet movies.
