Trump got into office because voters were infatuated with a cult of personality. Btw, that is the exact same reason Obama was elected. I encountered the same rhetoric in both cases, "First time I've ever cared about politics! He is our savior who will solve all our problems and unite the nation (or at least unite the people who already like him, screw the rest)!" Both Obama and Trump are fancy talkers with far too little experience. It's easy for voters to care about politics when it's all about worshiping a rock star. The day to day details of running a country are ignored because they simply aren't flashy enough to hold the voters' attention.

In college we read a book called Amusing Ourselves to Death. It explained we in America don't have to worry about 1984 coming true. We are closer to A Brave New World, in which entertainment replaces substance.
